2023-2024 Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In terms of stats, not really, but they do screen for strong mission fit. They’re looking for those that have had much experience working with underserved, Hispanic population and are within their zone in serving the southwest. It does take some time to get a secondary. I submitted first day and didn’t get one until late July while others got it sooner than me.
They screen for mission fit? I thought there was a 496 MCAT screen too

The emails are a marketing campaign we send out to everyone, including applicants, to give them more information about Burrell. If you don't want to receive these emails anymore, you can unsubscribe at the end of the email. But I think these are a great resource for applicants and non-applicants alike to learn about all Burrell has to offer!

How long after receiving the email notifying of the primary application did you receive a secondary?

What are my chances of getting into this school? I'm retaking the MCAT this Friday (my last score was in the mid 480s and that's because I didn't effectively study and zoned out mid-exam). My undergrad GPA is 3.66, science GPA is 3.51. Tons of clinical hours/position done. Currently enrolled in a grad school program as well. I'm freaking out.

No one can give you an exact chance %. To be honest, any medical school admission is based on some luck as well. Also, I'd make sure you can do well on exams.

I had another question before these two.

“Describe an experience you’ve had or an activity you’ve participated in that aligns with the mission of BCOM” (300 words max).
Reached out to adcom when I went to submit my secondary and didn't see this prompt anymore (bummer that I had already completed it). They confirmed that they adjusted the secondary and removed the prompt!

idk if there are different questions. Im working on my secondaries (applied aug 24, got secondary 25th) and I dont have this as one of my prompts. not the highest stat applicant (3.1 overall, 500 124/126/125/125) so idk if that has any effect.

for everyone else - how long did you wait to hear after submitting a secondary?

Sorry to double post but has anyone done the optional video? What did you talk about since they "wanted to get to know you better"? I just dont want to do 2 minutes of resume reading but also not 2 minutes of rambling lol

thanks!

Does the video help at all for admissions?
Personally think it can only hurt since you leave yourself up to judgement before interviews. I know plenty of people accepted without it. Just my 2 cents

Does this school send out a complete email after submitting the secondary and reviewing all our stuff?

I think so, I got a "got your AACOMAS", then a "youre invited to the secondary", then "your secondary is received and we will reach out regarding interviews" email.

Hey! Current second year at Burrell here--so I personally didn't submit a video and I was still accepted. But talking to some my friends and peers who also got into Burrell + submitted a video, I've heard video topics ranging from reiterating their resume to showcasing hobbies/sports/performances. I would consider using it as a tool to show a little more of your personality and well-roundedness.

Got the II yesterday.
Could a current/former student help answer these questions?

Thank you so much!
I have a couple questions:
1. Are preclinical and clinical years both P/F?
2. Are clinical rotations based on how you do from preclinical years or is it lottery?
3. How are the professors?
4. How is the prep for boards?
5. How long is dedicated time to study for boards?
6. What is the exam schedule like?
7. What is the remediation policy? Is it only one retake and if you fail another course, you repeat or are you dismissed?
8. Is the student environment competitive or chill?
9. What's your favorite thing about BCOM?
10. Are you happy?

THANK YOU!! :)

Other students might answer too, but we are working with a few Ambassadors to post their responses soon!

They already sent out IIs?
We can confirm that Interview Invites have begun to roll out. Invitations will continue to be sent in the coming days and throughout the cycle, as interviews are expected to be conducted from October to May. Make sure to monitor your email for updates from Admissions. If you have any updates to your application, remember to update in AACOMAS (if possible) and notify Admissions of those updates as well! Letters of interest can be submitted through your Burrell Applicant Portal.

I can answer a few of these questions for you!

1. Preclinical years are P/F. Clinical years are P/F as well (I would assume, sorry I'm not there yet).
2. There are a few clinical rotation sites (TX, NM x2, Four Corners, AZ, and FL) where students get to pick their top 3, and in the end, it is a lottery system. However, TX students must rotate in TX.
3. Professors are really supportive of their students and most of them have open office hours. They do care for your education and will try their best to make the content more enjoyable, and simple as possible.
4. I believe there will be dedicated time periods where you can study for your boards, and many advisors will help you along the way with scheduling. In terms of content that is given during in-house lectures that prepares you for boards is subjective to every student. Take that with a grain of salt. Our board passing rate has been going up, but like I said it is subjective to every student.
5. (I can't answer you that because I'm not there yet)
6. You'll usually get an exam every 2 weeks. More or less, every exam covers at least 16-35 lectures (which is a lot, but it's totally doable). Exams are usually in the morning.
7. (I can't answer that because most of us do well on our exams to move on, but you really have to be that bad of a student to fail a course. However, most professors would reach out to help you)
8. Once again, it's subjective, but since it is a P/F school, I would say most of us are very chill. Once test scores come out, you do sometimes feel that you could've done better (given that most of your other classmates performed higher).
9. My favorite thing about BCOM is the amount of volunteer opportunities you get. There is seemingly always something going on within the city that a club/organization is planning for and you can jump to different experiences anytime.
10. It's subjective as well, but for the most part, I am happy. If you never visited here before and come from an urban city, it might feel a bit different, but you will adapt very quickly.

Great questions! Here are answers that a few of our Ambassadors collaborated to provide:

1. Are preclinical and clinical years both P/F?
  • Yes, both are P/F.
2. Are clinical rotations based on how you do from preclinical years or is it lottery?
  • Your location for clinical rotations is based on a ranked based lottery system, not on preclinical performance.
3. How are the professors?
  • The professors are good. Obviously, some students will like some professors over others based on their teaching style and the way they like to learn. But overall they are good. They teach you and provide you with what you need to know, and then how you study the material is up to you. Sometimes the amount of material might be overwhelming, but professors are always available for office hours and are very accommodating to meet with you and explain things again.
4. How is the prep for boards?
  • We are provided with resources like Kaplan and Truelearn question banks. These are good resources to use throughout the second year to keep up with doing board-style questions. However, you also can purchase other resources at discounted prices (like Uworld, Amboss) which our incredible curriculum class reps get for those who are interested in purchasing.
5. How long is dedicated time to study for boards?
  • Dedicated is 6 weeks after the last block of our second year. It starts around mid-end April.
6. What is the exam schedule like?
  • For each systems block (eg. Cardio, Neuro, Renal, etc)–which can range from 2-4 weeks long–you’ll be having an exam at least every other week on average. There are a handful of blocks where that can be more or less, but generally speaking, there’ll be a systems exam every two weeks or so. Interspersed will also be OMM, Anatomy, or Clinical Skills exams which can sometimes fall during the same week as a systems exam.
7. What is the remediation policy? Is it only one retake and if you fail another course, you repeat or are you dismissed?

  • The full remediation policy is found in the Student Catalog on page 49 (https://burrell.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Catalog-2023-2024-8.pdf). However, Burrell also tries to catch students before they even have to remediate. They have a program called SPARK, where if you’re starting to struggle academically they’ll work and talk with you on how the school can best support you. Not sure how to set up a study schedule? They’ll help you write a detailed weekly plan. Think you might have undiagnosed ADHD? Here’s a list of local specialists in Las Cruces. Literally just need a good cry for 20 minutes? The Education Specialists’ office always has tissues and good snacks.
8. Is the student environment competitive or chill?
  • The student environment is very chill, of course, there will always be a handful of gunners but folks here aren’t going out of their way to bring you down and everyone is very helpful and collaborative. Since we’re in a smaller community everyone naturally makes close bonds with each other.
9. What's your favorite thing about BCOM?
  • My favorite thing about BCOM is that there are over 60 student organizations ranging from specialties you might be interested in, interest groups (music, health and nutrition, running club), and clubs for so many different cultures/religions (south asian medical student association, national arab-american medical association, christian medical association) and so much more!! You can find your place at this school in so many different clubs and organizations. There’s always so much going on as well with volunteering and different club events, you’ll never get bored. And if you do get overwhelmed with school, you can always go hiking in the beautiful outdoors. Las Cruces has so many good hiking spots!!
10. Are you happy?
  • Yes, I’m happy! The first year of medical school is obviously an adjustment. It takes a couple months to get used to being in a new place, surrounded by new people while also learning so much information. But you learn to handle it and adjust just like you’ve done throughout your life. Medical school is what you make it to be and you have to find a balance to keep yourself happy.

I was completely august 17th and haven’t gotten an II… is there still hope? :/

Anyone else get an II today? Signed up for an October interview since I figured it's best to do it ASAP.

Would I count as OOS if I'm from FL? Since Burrell hasn't opened their FL campus and all.
