A hold is generally perceived to be a soft R. So in this case, no news is definitely good news! It means they're still considering you

It had a 8000 character secondary essay, and it was probably about your whole life and every experience you've ever had.
It's good that they are taking their time and reading them word for word.

In previous years nobody gets off hold. I think its almost an applicant pool for them to pull from if they need to but typically dont

No letters of interest except for people who are on the waitlist, and only after admissions gives the go ahead in late April

Nah, I'm pretty sad about it tbh. I really wanted to stay in California. More confusion than anything else. I guess public schools don't want a non trad postdoc.
