I'm an MD medical student at a "top" institution, and for some reason, every single one of the multitude of HPM faculty at my school are either IM or Peds trained, none are FM trained. It seems to be the same on a surface level Google search at other top medical schools/hospital systems. I was wondering if that is common to see across the US? Do IM physicians have an advantage on matching into a HPM fellowship vs. FM physicians or finding an academic position?

No. What you are seeing is largely artifact from reality that the overwhelming majority of applicants come from an IM background and your limited sample size.

FM stands as the 2nd largest primary specialty in HPM.

My PD was FM trained along with many of the faculty. I have had coworkers at each academic job since then that are, too, FM trained.

You can be a radiologist and easily match HPM fellowship.
