REAPPLICANT WITH FOUR GAP YEARS:
  1. AMCAS sGPA/cGPA: 3.33/3.46
  2. MCAT score: 508 (126/127/127/128) taken in September 2022
  3. ORM Florida resident, born and raised in NYC
  4. Undergraduate at public FL school, Biology major
  5. Clinical experience:
- Medical assistant at rural primary care clinic- 800 hours

- Medical assistant at ENT practice- 400 hours (ongoing)
  1. Research experience:
- 2.5 years of neurology research (2 oral presentations at international conferences both with published abstracts, 2 publications one of which is first author)

- 1 year of undergrad research in an ecology/evolution lab (no pubs)

- 2 poster presentations at diversity conferences on volunteer work in Greece
  1. Shadowing experience: 600 hours
Neuro-sleep

Neurosurgery

Pediatric urology surgery

Internal medicine

Emergency medicine

Obstetrics
  1. Non-clinical volunteering: 200 hours
Data entry coordinator during COVID-19

Volunteer at pro-bono human rights law firm

PeaceJam mentor for high schoolers

Local volunteering at shelters in undergrad
  1. Other extracurricular activities:
Teaching assistant for undergrad bio lab for three semesters- 875 hours
  1. Relevant honors or awards:
Received a service scholarship that funded medical shadowing in Greece

Received an academic scholarship for academic improvement in college

Inducted into my undergrad’s scholar society in my senior year
  1. Anything else not listed you think might be important:
Was placed on academic probation after the first semester of college (strong upward trend; Presidents List in the final semester of college)

Applied early decision to my undergrad last year and was rejected, applied to 12 more schools late in the cycle.

With my stats, I know DO is the more likely path but naturally, I would prefer MD schools. I am hoping applying earlier will prove to be more successful. Below is my list for MD schools, in no particular order and pulled from MSAR. It is quite extensive and I would like to trim it to make it as realistic as possible given my stats and experiences. I have not yet looked into which are out-of-state unfriendly so any insight would be appreciated:

I have considered, and I have retaken a few courses to improve my GPA, but after 4 gap years I am just ready to get started in my career. I suppose I was hoping my strong experiences would make up for poor stats.

What reasons were you given for your rejection from ED at your undergrad? It is customary to have a conference with the Dean before you apply ED? Did you do that? Your list needs some heavy editing. I’ll start- Morehouse, Meherry and Howard focus on African Americans. SIU has a specific Illinois geographic area they pull from. You have lots of OOS public schools on that list. You need to figure out if they are out of state friendly.
You really need DO schools if you want to go to med school. MD schools that might be interested have specific focus histories. They also usually expect way more service activities/hours than you have.

I did meet with the senior pre-health advisor at my undergrad multiple times who confirmed I would be a great ED applicant, they did not require permission from the Dean to apply as many other ED programs do so I moved forward per the advice of my advisor. They did not provide a reason for my rejection- it was actually a deferral to the regular admission pool and eventual rejection 8 months later.

Thank you for the insight on SIU, I know I need to go through that list to figure which are OOS friendly and which missions my experiences fit best. I know DO is the more realistic choice I just have not created a DO school list yet! I appreciate the advice and insight.

You have many state public schools on your list that admit very few non residents with your stats and no connection to the state (Mississippi, Mercer and SIU do not admit non residents). CUNY only admits applicants through an undergraduate program. The GPA-MCAT grid shows you have a ~50% chance for a MD acceptance so you should apply to DO schools also. I suggest these schools with your stats:
Florida State
U Florida
Central Florida
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
NOVA MD
Belmont
Wake Forest
Eastern Virginia
Drexel
Temple
Penn State
Albany
SUNY Upstate
SUNY Buffalo
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Oakland Beaumont
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
Alice Walton (when it opens)
Roseman (when it opens)
For DO schools I suggest these:
LECOM-Bradenton
NOVA
OCOM
BCOM (Florida campus)
CUSOM
NYITCOM
Touro-NY
PCOM (all schools)
WVSOM
MU-COM
DMU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
TUNCOM
AZCOM
UIWSOM
ACOM
VCOM (all schools except Monroe)

That is not what we asked. We asked if you had a meeting with the director of admissions at the school before deciding to go through ED.

Some schools use ED for internal applications only (like articulation agreement students). Some advertise ED but don't use them. ED is not used like in undergraduate admissions (to lock in high-stats or highly-desirable demographic applicants).

Where did you apply? Where did you get interviews? What were your post-interview decisions?

Well it is good to know that now... no I did not meet with the DoA of the school prior to applying ED.

I applied to FSU (ED), UF, FAU, UCF, USF, Colorado, Rochester, Rosalind Franklin, Rush, SUNY Downstate, Maryland, and Wayne State. No interviews, all rejections.

Do not list shadowing in Greece next time you apply. You do not have to count all the hours of shadowing either. 100 hours across those specialties is plenty. 600 is excessive considering shadowing is following a physician or potentially watching in the OR.

Can you break out your non-clinical hours by activity?

I'm not a DO expert so can't really help there, but my best advice is avoid ED this go around.
