Preparing for Externships

I'm a 3rd year from a small state school. I have a decently well rounded CV. My school doesn't have a rad onc residency program, so I'm planning on getting 2 letters from 2 externships this summer. Any thoughts on preparing for these externships? What do I need to know before I go up there? Do you recommend taking a med onc rotation prior to my externships? Any and all help is appreciated.
