Curious how many they'll interview this cycle since they accept 5 each year.

At least 50, likely more. I'm wondering how they narrowed the list of people chosen for interviews-must have come down to CBSE/letters/publications.

Wow very informative, thank you!

Historically they have interviewed 42. Last year they ranked 18, and matched their top 5 by their 9th choice. Dr. Bastidas does not look at CBSE as much as other programs since he has no score cut off. The application is viewed as a whole from he has told me. More emphasis is put on formal grades, gpa, and class rank if you have them.

I don't know all the ins and outs of how programs play the MATCH system, but is there a reason why they would only rank 18 out of the 42 they interviewed? I would find it hard to believe that the other 24 candidates that didn't get ranked were really that abysmal the program didn't even want to take a chance on having them as a resident??

Asking for programs in general but using this as an example since you gave numbers.

I'm currently preparing for match day in 7 days for ortho, so I'm not doing OMFS but I can probably answer your question.

Once you get past ranking a certain number of people, it becomes very difficult to rank the rest. Everyone starts to blur together and the lines between one candidate or the other become hard to see. Additionally, programs have statistics on how far down their rank list they typically go each year before they fill all their seats. It's likely that program has not gone past, say, #13 on their list ever, and so there is no reason for them to really rank people past 18.

I don't know this for sure but that's just my educated guess based on my experience talking with program directors at my dental school.

Match scenario question...

Applicant A’s rank list:
1. Red
2. Green

Applicant B’s rank list:
1. Green
2. Blue

Program Green’s rank list:
1. Applicant A
2. Applicant B

If Applicant A doesn’t match in program Red, will they still match in program green, despite Applicant B ranking Green higher?

I believe the answer is yes. Just double checking my understanding of the match.

Also, in theory, if applicant A ranked program green #7, but somehow didn’t March at their #1-6, they would still match at program green over other applicant that ranked program green higher?

Just rank the programs in the order of how much you want to go there. The match favors the applicant over the program, always.

The match works by initially placing you at your #1 program. You get knocked from that spot if applicants the program ranked higher fill all their openings.

the match then puts you in your #2 program. You only get knocked from that if applicants the program ranked higher fill all their openings.

the match then puts you in your #3...and so on.

you fall through your rank list until you land on your highest pick that wants you.

basically your chances at a program are not decreased by ranking them low or last.

is anyone here a reapplicant/applicant who had no luck this cycle? I went from 29 apps and 8 interviews to 40+ apps and 0 interviews, currently a noncat. I am disappointed and can only attribute it to this year being extremely competitive due to applicants casting wider nets due to virtual interviews...

What were your stats? GPA/rank and CBSE? I'm very sorry to hear that. Did you have no luck at your home program?

Regarding interviews/match this year at our program (6 yr)-
Applications went up by 50% over last year (I think this is due to "wider net cast")
Average Applicant CBSE score 210
I think the applicant pool this year is exceptionally talented.
We will interview the same number (30) for our 5 spots.

Do you happen to know the average CBSE score for those offered interviews? Thank you for the data, its very informative.

This is a fantastic article!

TLDR: "...Programs may be sacrificing interviews on candidates that have no intention of ranking them highly... programs may experience unmatched positions because of the disproportionate interviewing of a smaller group of more competitive applicants.

EDIT: I originally had a much longer comment elaborating on my personal experience during the trail so far, and I detailed how it agrees with many things that are touched on in the article. Applicants (including me) heard that everyone else was applying to 50+ programs due to the absence of financial constraints, and the herd mentality took over. Like making a run on the bank. No one wants to risk going unmatched, so we applied everywhere and every applicant is taking every invite they can cram into their schedule.

Your longer comment was a nice read!

I hope some of these programs get boned by inviting only dental students with no real strengths other than inflated CBSEs. As if they forgot they had all the time in the world to study during the lockdowns lol

I know someone with a 95+ CBSE who is missing out on a ton of interviews despite being a cool guy. I don't know how applicants are selected, but CBSE definitely isn't the only thing they are considering. If anything, they are probably relying on extracurriculars more than usual since there are so many competitive applicants.

I have been asked twice so far "How many times did you take the CBSE? And when?", and when I said "Once, in August 2019" they seemed satisfied. But maybe that's reading into it too much. I thought the stats came out for the August/September 2020 CBSE and we saw the mean was about the same as every other time.

At least at my school, it almost seems random who is getting interviews, and doesn’t really correlate to cbse scores too well. It’s almost been comical to us who gets interviews to where and who doesn’t. Seems very random.

What extracurriculars are they looking at? People always say rank, CBSE, non-cat year >> everything else in a normal cycle. Externships most likely aren't really a factor. Are you referring to things like regional ties, prestige of school, research, leadership, etc.? I feel like most of that is either fluff or out of your control.

I think regional ties are a big deal. People are more likely to go to places closer to them and programs know that. Not easy moving an entire family.

I’ve been asked quite a few times where I would like to live, where my wife would like to live, where else I’ve interviewed, how I would rank the places I’ve already interviewed at, etc... seems like they’re really trying to gauge interest rather than simply seeing if the applicant is qualified or not

Can anyone post their stats for those who got a lot of interviews at the 4 year programs? It seems like some with high CBSE or class rank aren't getting too many so I'm curious of what type of applicants are getting interviews

I know a lot of people with high 60s to low 70s with decent numbers, about 8-10 interviews. They casted a very wide net of 45-50 programs though.

I agree with you, but just looking at the residents page at all the programs in my state (south) and only 1/4 of the residents are from the south. The majority are from the west coast or NE. That being said, there could just be more competitive/ a larger amount of applicants from the NE/Cali since that's where most of the "specialist factory" schools are lol.

This is a great comment.

Here is my question, then: I scored well on the CBSE, I have several first author chapters/publications. Multiple mission trips. International travel for oral and poster presentations for research. I have an additional graduate degree. I was top 20 in my class at a very good dental school. I am now doing a non categorical year. Why do I have less than 5 interviews this year?

All I’m looking for is the logic in selecting dental students with half their D4 years abandoned by COVID vs the many others in my same shoes for these interviews. Any current residents or anyone affiliated with a program, I’d greatly appreciate a comment.

I was involved with this process for 6 years at my program and interview invites were pretty much 100% based on cbse score (a handful were based off connections). Applicant ranking after the interview was still majority cbse score. Maybe other programs are different or things have changed but we had a strict score cut off for our first tier interview.

Is there more than 1-2 individuals who scored over 80 with less than 8 interviews this year? That to me would be the true metric on whether things have changed.

I know someone with mid 80s who has 5. I do think basing it almost solely off the score is going to bite some places in the ass especially with zoom interviews when you can’t weed out the weirdos. I can think of two people in my class alone who are socially inept with high 75+ cbse scores and I’d rather be a periodontist than have to spend four or six years with them

Are you Canadian/international?
Are you applying to mostly 4 years?

Nope. 25 applications with pretty even mix of 4/6 year programs.

Keep your head up, show the 5 programs how much you want them, it only takes 1 program to consider you at Rank 1-2 to get in.

What was your cutoff for first tier interview? Also, what ended up being the CBSE scores of those you ranked highly? Thanks in advance.

Yeah that’s what the interviews are for though. Interview the smartest and then weed out the weirdos. Obviously some can fool you though @PhansterZ

I’m sure there are some randoms with 80+ who don’t have 9+, but i would be surprised if there were more. If there has been then you could definitely attribute it to covid.

This was 2 years ago...but almost everyone in first tier was 75 and up...and the highest ranks were definitely above 72. But i feel like in 2 years the scores have increased by 5-10 points. That’s a guess though.

Do we think most programs are more likely to choose their own this cycle?

These people are all capable of faking it through a few 20 minute zoom interviews, believe me lol. It’s better than nothing but a full day of in person interaction is much different. Im excited to see where they end up and might consider sending some flowers and a condolences card to the program directors
