Hello Anterior Segment/Cornea/Refractive surgery applicants! Please feel free to PM me with any questions.

I am the current Surgical Fellow at Parkhurst Nuvision in San Antonio, TX, and I am happy to announce that Dr. Parkhurst wants to bring on another surgical fellow next year to start in July of 2020. This is an ideal fellowship for someone interested in a long-lasting career in anterior segment surgery with a strong interest in cataract, refractive (LASIK, PRK, SMILE, ICL, KAMRA, Intacs, Cross Linking), MIGS, efficient private practice, and cutting-edge research opportunities with exposure to new products/platforms and industry.

This application process will be performed outside the San Francisco match, so interested applicants should send their resume to Marisa Escobedo at [email protected].

I have only been a surgical fellow under Dr. Parkhurst for about 2.5 months, but would like to share my surgical experience so far.

(**NOTE: Scroll down to see my surgical numbers over the past 2.5 months, over 658 PRIMARY surgeries and procedures so far)

I am in the OR a TON, with minimal call, including no trauma...period.

Leaving residency, I was torn between going into private practice or doing a fellowship. I actually did not find what I wanted in terms of a fellowship, so I went into private practice for a year practicing as a comprehensive ophthalmologist. Not being happy and satisfied as a comprehensive ophthalmologist and realizing I wanted to be a sub-specialist in refractive surgery, I sought opportunities to further my training in refractive surgery. I also wanted an opportunity to learn how to perform clinical trials as a clinical investigator and also learn how to run a successful high-volume cataract and refractive private practice.

This then led me to meet Dr. Parkhurst last year and we set up an opportunity for me to be the first cataract refractive fellow under him at his private practice at Parkhurst Nuvision. When I interviewed, I realized this fellowship could be a career-changing opportunity. Dr. Parkhurst is the leading ICL surgeon in the country, is involved with many clinical trials, and consults with numerous companies in industry all over the world. If you are wanting a career where you are not only involved with patient care, but also coming up with new ideas and driving clinical and surgical innovation, this is an amazing opportunity to learn how to do so.

In addition, Dr. Parkhurst does over 300 eyes a month of refractive surgery. Most of my surgeries are in a 4k, 3-D Heads up display using the INGENUITY system. This system enables teaching new surgical techniques very efficiently and effectively.

In addition to an incredible surgical experience, the practice is involved in over 10 clinical trials currently, including new IOLs and MIGS devices, and has its own research department. This gives opportunities to collaborate with industry.

Given that I am the first fellow, we do not have surgical numbers for a whole year. But just to give you an idea, below is what I have done so far in just 2.5 months. Also, to give you some perspective, last week I did 18 cataracts. And this coming week, I will be traveling to Mexico to do a surgical mission trip where I will be doing phaco and small incision extracaps on about 50-60 patients. So, the surgical numbers are going to keep going up and up week by week. Dr. Parkhurst gives me as many surgeries as I can personally handle. In addition, it is important to note that his practice does a lot of co-management with the local optometrist in San Antonio, and we also work closely as a team with 4 optometrist in his office as well.
