MD & DO 2019 Match Lists

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wonder why so many “Medicine Preliminary” listed?
Since derm, rads, gas, rad-onc require a prelim/transitional pgy1 and those pgy1 positions aren't also listed next to the pgy2 spots, I'm guessing they just bunched all the transitional and prelim pgy1 positions together. My school does it that way too.

I guess - most schools list the match as the one the student will go to after their preliminary year.

I'm assuming based on only 2 TY that that list includes the Med Prelim -> Rads/Rad Onc/Derm/etc...

Dude that list is straight fire. Strongest one I've seen yet outta them.
Not too familiar with assessing how good a match list is. Thanks for addressing. Makes me feel better about where Im leaning to go to.

Anyone have USUHS (Uniformed Services University)?
That list won't be very illuminating because they as well as all HPSP people are required to participate in the military match. You're gonna see a lot of NMMC San Diego, Bethesda and Portsmouth, Walter Reed, Ft. Hood, Ft. Bragg, and so on. The other thing about that list is you're going to see a higher proportion of what you might call transitional years because those people are going to do an intern year and then go to a GMO tour (General Medical Officer). Some of those are for flight surgeon slots, some even go to flight school. Some even go do 'other' secret suirrel things depending on their background. Those folks do a specialty residency later on down the road, so that match list would likely leave a lot of head scratching going on.

Is it? Diagnostic radiology and radiation oncology are vastly different fields lol.

They are but maybe under normal circumstances 15 students do DR and 2-4 do rad onc. 23:1 is not surprising for NYMC, however. Most years they match >20 (a season high as nearly 27-28 IIRC some years. One of more revered faculty members is well known to be a positive influence to go into radiology (including a required radiology rotation 4th yr!).

I'm sure it's for the intern years for all the neurology, diagnostic radiology, derm, rad onc, and pm & r.

Not too familiar with assessing how good a match list is. Thanks for addressing. Makes me feel better about where Im leaning to go to.

Just to address this-it is not prudent to assess a school's quality by its match list. First, because it is so based on the scores and activities (not to mention preferences-residency choice is often not prestige chasing anymore) of the individual but also second, because it is difficult to know where a good match truly is. For example, I'm an emergency resident. While Harvard and Hopkins are great residencies, the most coveted spots are often considered to be places like Highland, Denver, LAC-places that are not nearly as competitive for internal medicine. Match lists are dangerous for the under-informed (and it is hard to not be under-informed)!

Cannot stress this enough. Even in fields like Urology, the top 10 are not what you might expect (Harvard/Pen/Yale aren't there for example)

It is also super dependent on the interests of that particular class.

And just to address this in turn, most people in EM don't "covet" Highland, Denver, LAC, or whatever is at the top of the Doximity list. Going into EM and trying to be a prestige snob is one of the dumbest thing you could do.

Haha exactly, Iowa is actually one of the more impressive matches on that list. I guess I'll stick to ortho since I know that the most. Here are some other top 10-15 caliber ortho programs people might not expect: Rush, Utah, Carolinas Medical Center, Thomas Jefferson. Some programs that aren't as highly regarded as you might think: Michigan, Yale, Brown, Chicago, Dartmouth, Baylor, Mt. Sinai, UNC (Some would even say Stanford is in this category though I think it's a solid program).

Be careful when interpreting these match lists. Heck, these lists are hard enough to read as an MS4 who recently matched

@FindMeOnTheLinks Gonna disagree that where you go to school matters too much— Pitt is ranked “higher” than Case Western, yet this match list is objectively worse.
Exception to the rule, you can always find a few, but that doesn't prove a general pattern to be untrue. Look at the competitive specialties and you'll see a much higher representation of name-brand schools relative to who-the-hell-knows schools.
Even still, Case is a great school and Pitt's list is better than a lot of no names.

Yeah, to compare the matches you can look at the doximity rankings for each residency type, though you need a medical school email to make an account. I prefer to calculate how many percent of a class is going into the top 5 competitive specialties (derm, plastics, nsg, ortho, ent). It's not the perfect metric but there is a very strong correlation between prestige/ranking and this percentage. For example, most top schools send around 15% into these fields, and as you go down the rankings this decreases. Mid tiers send around 10% and the lowest tiers around 5%. Also, I see some variations with the top ranked public schools that don't seem to follow this trend as much (send a lower percent into these fields). But yes, I know this all depends on class preference yadda yadda, but I've found it to be a good proxy personally.

I do something similar and also look at the % of IM matches that match at T20 residencies since the reality is those that come in gunning for ortho/derm/etc are most likely to go into IM (or gen surg) if they arent competitive for those fields.

Edit: to add on to the top 5 hardest, I also add in stuff like optho and IR since those are competitive too. So I look at Neurosurg, Ortho, Derm, Plastics, ENT, Optho, and IR

I also generally look at IM matches; Idk how true it is but I was under the impression IM residency’s are influenced by med school prestige the most.

Yeah stuff like that and psych are very competitive at the top. I was talking to a JHU chief resident in psych who said they have a very large number of 260+ apply these past 2 years. So people who could probably apply to the more competitive stuff if they wanted to (but apparently psych is quickly becoming the new derm)

Interesting name for a medical center...

If you get sick at O'Hare airport, you have a 50/50 chance of being transported to Resurrection. It is also where customs sends suspected drug mules for an x-ray...

True, but I would also wonder how much is attributable to the general competitiveness of the students themselves at top schools - like better test taking abilities, more experience in research settings, maybe just an innate desire to go to more competitive specialties in desirable locations whereas people at lower ranked schools may not live and die by prestige. I definitely agree that there are resources at T5/T10 schools that will put you at an advantage.

Also another way I read lists is to look at location. Its awesome if they are matching a ton of people into MGH/BJH/etc but if you are trying to be on the west coast for residency, that may not be as influential compared to if they are matching a lot into Stanford, UC programs, etc.

The thing about Pitt is that, from my research, it is an actually more "holistic" admissions. That's why if you look at the MCAT and STEP1 for the school compared to other schools in the same rank range it is lower (515ish matriculated MCAT vs 518+ at peer institutitons) (low 230s vs low 240s at peer institutions).

Less discussion, more ranklists.

Sidenote: the % going into surgical subspecialty is an utterly useless metric, but premeds love it for some reason.

What makes you say its utterly useless? Genuine questions, I value your rationale and opinion kind sir.
Not everyone wants to be a surgeon, many of those who do prior to matriculating change their mind, including those at the top of their class. Also, while IM is generally easier to match into than say ortho, getting MGH for IM is prob just as hard as matching HSS for ortho. You also can't just look at the # matching into X speciality without looking at the class size. Ex- Case's match is/always impressive but they also have a massive class. Their 2018 entering class was 214 students.
