Okay, that is impressive. People dog on Drexel a lot but 4 neurosurgery, 4 IR, 8 ortho, and 7 ophtho? Woohoo!
I’d love to know the breakdown of all those prelim and TY matches and how many matched advanced positions because 8 ortho is great, but if there were 16 who applied, then that’s pretty concerning.

Drexel's website is pretty transparent, saying that of 254 who entered 2024 Match about 6.5% had to SOAP (16 or so).

Some of these 16 may have been people who tried for a competitive specialty & didn't make it, or could also be people who didn't apply to enough places or get enough interviews for some reason to any specialty.
There are 4 specialties for sure that require a preliminary year. Here are the numbers on Drexel's list:
Diagnostic Radiology 9
Ophthalmology 7
Dermatology 4
Interventional Radiology 3 >>>total of 23 people who needed a prelim. year
Now compare that to the Drexel list which shows:
15 Medicine Preliminary
6 Surgery Preliminary
17 Transitional >>>> for a total of 38 1-year placements
23 of those would correlate to people needing a preliminary year, 38 - 23 = 15
which is approximately the number who needed to SOAP.
Some Ophthalmology programs will line you up with your transitional year at the same place where you got your residency, which might explain why my numbers don't completely add up and may be off by 1 or 2.

Thanks for breaking it down! Here are some things to add to your analysis:
- All ophtho programs are categorical now, however if the program is “joint” rather than “integrated”, they will usually list the intern year separately and sometimes they do the prelim/TY year at a different hospital but always in the same city (ie UCSD TY at Scripps, UMN TY at Hennepin)
- PM&R also does a prelim/TY year
- Anesthesia sometimes does a separate prelim/TY year as well, but the majority are categorical
- Same for neurology (majority are categorical, some are not)

This seems to be kind of a transitional time for ophthalmology, with some programs integrating the prelim year match but not all.
I was surprised to learn this year that some anesthesia programs have a prelim year - never too old to learn something new

As far as I know Anesthesia always did. Interesting to see there are still separate programs for Optho. Someone who went through the cycle in 2019 for 2020 said that was considered the last year for a separate admission for prelim year and starting 2021 start cycle they were integrating them into same program - i.e., whoever admits for optho will reserve seats in prelim year in their own programs.

I cant tell if this is a good or mediocre IM list?
Though I suppose like any list we don't know the circumstances of the individuals (location over prestige, couples matching, etc)
I matched ophtho this year. Your friend is right. All programs have a categorical match where you go to one place for all 4 years, and you do not need to submit an ERAS application to apply for or interview at separate prelim/TY intern years. The attached prelim/TY years all automatically reserve a slot for the ophtho interns. All intern years are also required to have 3 months of ophthalmology rotations.
It gets a little fuzzy because there is a slight difference between "joint" categorical programs and "integrated" categorical programs, and the biggest difference is that joint programs require you to register for the NRMP, but you only rank the one program that you matched at in early Feb. Joint programs can also technically be at different hospitals in town like Harbor-UCLA for UCLA residents, Scripps for UCSD, Hennepin for UMN, etc rather than the university campus.
So, for example, in the case of Drexel's ophtho matches, WashU is integrated, so it does not list WashU among the prelim spots, but Ohio State is joint, so the applicant had to match through the NRMP for the intern year, thus the Ohio State prelim year and the Ohio State ophtho match are both listed.

Someone messaged me and I realized for whatever reason the whole thing didn’t paste when I first posted.
For those students that entered the MATCH it was a 95% MATCH rate

unfortunately no, our school doesn’t release that information even to students for student safety.

For IM it really highlights how much Hopkins is lacking, likely due in huge part to their schedule (and location as well but they cant change that)
Pretty much everyone went to the other 3 of the Big 4, and the few others went elsewhere.
