What is the benefit of providing your parents' financial aid information?

I will be starting medical school this year, and I am currently filling out my FAFSA. Medical schools have been telling me that it is recommended that I provide my parents' financial information, but I am not sure why. I would like to maximize the amount of financial aid that I can obtain, and I am wondering if someone can explain to me why it would be beneficial to provide my parents' information. Thanks.

You'll only be eligible for institutional need based aid if you submit your parental data. If you don't you'll just get loans or merit aid.
