Saudi Arabia has de-recognized postgraduate medical degree programs of Pakistan and asked Pakistani doctors in the kingdom to be ready to leave or be deported, according to a media report on Wednesday. The Saudi Ministry of Health said the Pakistani medical programs lacked structured training, which is mandatory to hire medics in high positions, the Dawn newspaper said in a report.
Hundreds of medics are affected by the decision. Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain are also following the Saudi government's move to derecognize Pakistani medical programmes, the report said. Most of the affected Pakistani doctors were hired by the Saudi Health Ministry in 2016 when it conducted interviews in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, it said.
"Your application for professional qualification has been rejected. Reason is that your master degree from Pakistan is not acceptable according to the SCFHS regulations," read the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties' (SCFHS) letter. One of the affected medics told the Dawn that the same degree program offered by India, Egypt, Sudan and Bangladesh was being accepted in Saudi Arabia and other countries, becoming a cause of embarrassment for them.

Why? you can't practice in the US without completing a residency, you can't get a residency without passing steps one and two and being a foreign medical graduate you have to prove that you're better than everybody else anyway. what do we have to gain by not letting exceptional Pakistani doctors practice here?

When I was a resident, the other residents from Aga Khan University in Pakistan were true stars, outshining most of the other residents. This was at Duke. This cultural BS is, well, BS.

This seems a lot more political than medical to me

I’ve met Pakistan trained doctors and they never seemed inferior to me, if they pass the exams/training required of others in the country and their outcomes are good then let them practice

I've scribed for an IM doctor for 8 months prior to med school who was Pakistani. He was the highest paid PCP in a city of 1,000,000+ people. He was truly amazing. This definitely seems more political than medical. And, as VA stated earlier, they have to undergo the rigorous US-matriculation process anyways, so whether or not they were properly trained, they've proven they're smart enough to succeed in the American system regardless.

I know we throw out the word racist all the time in the current age, but this is one of those times that I think it actually applies.

It's one thing to say 'US grads first' or 'US citizens first' but to throw out doctors that have been in practice here already? What a joke.

In what way is it racist?

Always interesting to see how willing people are to stereotype large swaths of people when the stereotype is perceived as positive, but when it's negative it's deeply immoral.
