Medical Safety Medical Schools?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Greetings!

In the medical school admissions arena of single digit acceptance rates, it is tough to know what medical schools are true “safeties” for any applicant.

The reality may be tough to hear: Regardless of how strong an applicant you are, there are rarely “safety” medical schools. Because there are many more qualified medical school applicants than there are spaces in medical school classes, so much of the medical school admissions process is subjective.

However, do not be discouraged. Depending on your MCAT, GPA, background, state residency, and experiences, there may be a number of medical schools that you would be “likely” to get in to.

So, what is the solution to make sure you are accepted to medical school? Or, even better, that you have the opportunity to choose between medical schools? The answer is to apply broadly, to present yourself authentically, and to assume nothing. Even if your MCAT and GPA are above a medical school’s stated average, there is no guarantee that you will receive an interview or an acceptance.

The good news? Our students have done exceptionally well this year and only a couple had true “hooks” and neither “connections” nor legacy come in to play in medical school admissions like they do for college admissions.

Here is only a handful of the medical schools our students will attend next year:

UCSF, Wash U, NYU, UNC , Sidney Kimmel, Icahn/Sinai, Robert Wood Johnson, Vanderbilt, University of Massachusetts, Brown, Southwestern, Northwestern, USC

So, what is the secret? No secrets. It’s about putting your best story on paper and applying to the right medical schools to improve your odds of receiving interviews. Then, it’s about converting those interviews to acceptances!

If you want to know more about how to make an effective school list or how to tell your story so it has broad appeal, see the links below. Good luck!

Warmly,
Jessica Freedman, M.D.
