Which school would you choose if the prices were the same?

Rutgers. I don't want to live in Baltimore, UMD has one of the least expensive schools, but I don't think you could pay me to go there (why I didn't apply there). Not sure how the program actually is, but wouldn't want to live in the city.

60-Day Crime and Fire Log This is from their website
Look at the past 3 days:
Screen Shot 2023-02-10 at 12.40.35 PM.png

2 crimes related to guns. The shooting is 0.3 miles away from the dental school (2 blocks away). And someone was assaulted in the School of Dentistry on Tuesday. I would rather not risk my life walking back to my apartment after studying in the library at 11 pm. But for me, safety is extremely important.

One of my favorite schools is Roseman University, and in the past 3 years they have had 3 crimes happen. (2 times, someone left the keys in the golf cart, and it was stolen; the other crime was for stalking). I think Roseman is probably one of, if not the safest dental schools. But compare those 3 crimes to just the 3 crimes above at UMD... Keep in mind we are comparing a 3-year period to a 3-day period. I would much rather pay Roseman's $100k a year in tuition for 4 years than UMD's $30k a year in-state tuition just for peace of mind.

I’d delete this part before Big hoss or ivy sees it lol

Big hoss will nail me for that part lol, but it is true. I don't think it's worth the risk of getting assaulted or worse to attend dental school for lower tuition all things being equal. I put the value of my life higher than the tuition difference haha

If anyone else has any input about the schools to help aid in my decision. I'd love to know if they have trouble finding or recruiting patients, if D4s feel comfortable with their clinical skills upon graduation or if a GPR/AEGD is necessary.

are you sure the total cost of attendance is the same?
rutgers gives you in-state after one year...

UMD is less expensive:
in-state $20k
non-resident tuition is $40k

Rutgers:
Out of state: $90k
In-state is $55k

That's wrong. The UMD tuition is double what you said. They display their tuition by semester. Still cheaper than Rutgers though.

One of my friends from Maryland said this is what their tuition is; with fees and equipment, they said it's around $30k a year (not counting living). Also on dental explorer, that's what it shows:

Pretty sure all those 3rd party sites reporting the tuition are not reading the top of the document on Maryland's website. Straight from the source: https://www.umaryland.edu/media/umb/af/sa/dds22-23.pdf

And here it is with annual tuition from a few years ago: https://www.usmd.edu/usm/adminfinance/budget/FY2019/umb2019.pdf

Talonslash you are right. The first link is the current tuition and fees for UMD.
Based on my calculations UMD is 30K less than Rutgers (total & in tuition/fees only) and considering getting in-state after D1.
A difference but not a huge one either. Which is why I am trying to get more info on the school first, then the location.

Interesting, thanks for sharing that! I'm going to have to pass that along to them, they are in-state also, so it's going to cost them about double what they originally thought unfortunately. I also heard (not sure if this is true) that you also get in-state tuition at UMD after 1-2 years? Not sure if that is true or not though.

I haven't been to Rutgers, but one of my roommates went there for undergrad and loved it. She's from New Jersey and enjoyed going to school there. She's applying to dental school next year, and that's her top choice.

Abeezdent, where are you from? Is one school closer than the other, or do you have family in either location?

Not sure what these numbers are. Tuition/Fees and everything was closer to 55-60k a year depending on the year.
Baltimore sucks, but it's not that bad. The school itself is good. There's police escorts as well if you're worried about staying out late.
