Hypothetical question... Say someone gets granted a deferment in the military match, and the civilian programs they applied to differ in length. Some have built-in mandatory research years, others have have the possibility of optionally doing 1-3 research years, and others just have the basic curriculum. Are any of those extra research/elective years permitted by the Navy?
I'm an MS-3, and pretty sure I want to pursue surgery (previously was considering neurosurgery or ortho). Our dean told us HPSP kids that it would be wise to apply civilian too even if we ranked deferment last, so I've been looking up some of the possibilities... I'm just wondering if there would be any reason not to apply to programs longer than the basic 5 years? If I understand correctly, all general surgery programs are only accredited for 5 years even if they offer (or mandate) more.
