Is doing research in a field that you’re unfamiliar with a way to get exposed to it? Or should you only be doing research on something you know you have an interest in?

Research can be long commitments so I would prob only do research in things I am exposed to. Shadowing is 0 commitments and stress so I would do that to learn about a field first

It’s a way to see if you like a particular topic within a field. But you can do that with much less commitment by just reading some journal articles in the field. Shadowing is probably the better place to start, and then you can do research in a field you have interest in after some exposure.

Research is not always the best way to gain field exposure, oftentimes the subject material you’re researching can be pretty specific and not representative of the bread & butter of that specialty. Definitely use shadowing as the first line.
