If you are first author on a research article published in a dental journal, how much does that help you get an interview to a specialty program? Considering that you are otherwise a competitive applicant, not stellar, but competitive. Does it help out a lot, or is it just another thing on your CV, kind of like being in student council or volunteer work?

I think it has more weight in schools that are heavily research-based, which makes sense. Not necessarily being published, but research in general....some schools take it as a plus, another thing on the cv. Others it's quite important. It would probably serve you best to apply to more research based programs if you think you need the edge.

My advice to you is to become as well-rounded as possible. Do some research, get involved in some unique things, do some externships, etc. Anything unique that you can do that sets you apart from the others will help people remember you individually. That's usually, but not always, a good thing.
