When do most people start looking for and applying for first jobs after residency?

When do most people sign contracts by?

I am feeling very lost and have heard mixed answers from people.

Thanks!

It depends upon the circumstances. I knew people who applied for jobs their first year of residency because they knew where they wanted to be geographically. I probably started contacting places in the fall of my fellowship year. Unlike training programs, there is no national start date. Practices aren’t looking to fill starting July 1 so no need to fret

I started looking for jobs in August of my final year of residency, interviewed in the fall, and signed a contract around Thanksgiving. I think most of my co-residents signed for their jobs approximately November through March of their PGY-4 year.

Determining plans late in the spring can sometimes delay your intended start date, since some states take a long time to credential new physicians.
