Program Objectives for the Physical Medicine Board Exam
After participating in this CME activity, the learner should be able to:
Assess the best ways to handle common neuromuscular problems affecting one's patients. Describe how to enhance clinical practice related to the following problems: motor neuron disease, peripheral neuropathies (focal and generalized), neuromuscular junction disorders, and myopathies. Summarize when to order specific laboratory and genetic tests, muscle and nerve biopsies, and basic and advanced electrodiagnostic techniques that are used in evaluation of patients with the various possible neuromuscular disorders. Analyze the evidence regarding the prevalence of ordering unnecessary tests in the work-up
of patients with peripheral neuropathy – both acquired and hereditary types. Identify an approach to suspecting and diagnosing a patient with late-onset Pompe disease, the only muscle disease in which there is a medication available that is approved by the FDA.
