NHSC anyone heard?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anyone know how many people apply and how many get selected?

On the NHSC site it does not say how many apply or how many are accepted but it does give the figure that about 1 in 11 gets a scholarship.

I looked up the graduating class and found this document talking about the 2009 Conference for Scholars:

"We anticipate that most of the 137-plus NHSC Scholars who will become available for service in 2010 will attend this conference. These Scholars include 53 family physicians, 10 general pediatricians, 23 general internists, 19 dentists, 14 obstetrician/gynecologists, 4 family nurse practitioners, 2 physician assistants, 1 certified nurse-midwife, and 11 psychiatrists."

http://www.dphhs.mt.gov/PHSD/Primary-Care/documents/PCONewsJuly2009.pdf

There are 2 reasons that the 1 in 11 figure poses problems:

1. As seen above, the scholarships are divided among physicians (MD and DO), dentists, PAs, NPs, and nurse midwives but no breakdown is given anywhere, so depending on what you are going into, your chances are probably different.

2. This figure was given before this year, and with the bill that President Obama signed into effect in February, a huge amount of money has been made available for scholarships and loan repayment, so the number of scholarships is probably different now.

How many scholarships, though? No one knows.

I know a group of people received an email around August 9th. Sounds like those people have already received their official paperwork. Another group received their email around August 13th. They're still waiting!

My questions is this: Did medical students receive notification on August 9th and Dental students on August 13th - or were there medical and dental students in both batches?

I'm a PA student and I received an email on Sept. 14th saying I was a finalist or an alternate. I've been contacted several more times by them since, but with no definite answer yet. In the PA forum, it looks like the other PA finalists were also contacted on Sept. 14th.

Based on this thread, you appear to be about right. But I have heard from other sources that the NHSC has very little method to its madness (like we hadn't all figured that out already ).

To summarize the thread:

3 Med students from the forum were notified as early as August 13th, 20th, and 27th by their financial aid offices.

4 Med student forum members were notified of “finalist or alternate” status on September 9th.

3 Dental student forum members were notified of “finalist or alternate” status on September 14th.

I know this is not a definite answer to your question, but it's all the info I've got.

Haha I totally agree! I've been checking the mail like a fiend. Good Luck everyone!!! :)

Those of us who received the email are waiting for ARRA positions. As I understand it, there are approx. 45 positions this year, another 45 next year, through ARRA. Add to that the usual number of awards, that's about 100 scholarships. The number of applications varies, no one has the data for this year. NHSC claims the awards:applicant ratio is something between 1:7 and 1:14, but that's bogus, as far as I can tell. The total number of applicants in 2006 was just under 2000 (just over 100 awards).

I've said this before, but how that plays for you is very dependent upon your ethnicity and TANF status. IF you qualify as disadvantaged, I'd say those 1:7 odds are probably true. If you do not, I'd put at more like 1/20 at the outset, perhaps better if you've gotten that email. That 1/20 could go up or down depending on your program (the odds used to favor MD/DO, but dental has been rising in favor), and geography -it would be politically disastrous to leave out any one district, so if you and 50 of your friends at school got that letter, oh my.
:luck: to everyone including myself!

So has anyone who received one of the ARRA emails heard back yet? The 30th is fast approaching and my mailbox is still empty. :(

still nothing!!

Add me to the list; dental student & I got the "Finalist" email on Sept. 14th. Haven't heard anything about final reception....this waiting SUCKS! ;)

Well the mail has come and gone, and I still haven't heard. I was hoping that today would be the last day of waiting.

Same here. Do we know if they mail you the acceptance? Or is it email? Phone call?

I'm a med student who got the e-mail on Sept 14th. Just got off the phone with the call center, and they said that the Sept 30 deadline for notification still held, and if I didn't hear back from then by yesterday than I wasn't a recipient. Alas, bring on the debt!

I'm hoping the call center was wrong, but if they're right, it sucks big time.

I'm sorry for posting repeatedly, but this is what they NHSC website says:

"If you are selected to receive the National Health Service Corps Scholarship, you will be notified by e-mail or postal letter by September 30 and must respond promptly that you accept. If you do not accept by the deadline specified in your notification, your offer expires.

If you are selected as an alternate, you will be notified by e-mail by September 30 that you are an alternate. If a scholarship becomes available, you will be notified immediately.

If you are not selected as a scholarship recipient or alternate, you will be notified by October 31."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the email on Sept. 14 was notifying us that we were either an alternate or a finalist, and according to this, we should have been notified either way as to which one we were (alternate or finalist) by the 30th.

Anyone know anything more?

i recieved today a letter by USPS mail letting me know that i was selected for the scholarship, it was postmarked 9/28. Good luck all who are still waiting!

I have a hunch the e-mails we all received were sort of a combined notification. Now, people who got the scholarship have received/are receiving letters, but those of use who are alternates probably won't hear anything more unless our status changes and we move up the list.

Unless of course someone has actually received another e-mail specifically stating that they are alternates? That would certainly disprove my rather unsatisfying theory.

I also received the notification that I was a "finalist or alternate" for the NHSC Scholarship on September 9. I checked my mail again today and nothing has arrived. The way I see it, the people who run the NHSC are astoundingly incompetent, negligent, and duplicitous.

The 800 number that I used to call for coherent answers to my questions regarding the NHSC program is no longer in service. It seems that the group that the NHSC outsourced the management of application process had their contract revoked (or it expired) 3 days ago. Therefore I had no choice but to call the direct 800 number for the NHSC, and as expected, the person who answered the phone was not only rude but exceedingly unhelpful. She could not tell me what the status was of my application, not could she confirm my address, nor could she tell me exactly when I might hear a decision from the NHSC. When I explained to her that I had been told previously that I would hear a response from the NHSC BY SEPTEMBER 30, WHETHER OR NOT I HAD BEEN SELECTED TO RECEIVE THE SCHOLARSHIP, she said that the policy had changed and that she had no further information to offer me.

Every step of the way dealing with the NHSC has been an exasperating and infuriating experience. Prior to applying for the scholarship, I spoke with a couple of NHSC scholars who had completed their service commitment. Both advised me against taking the scholarship due to the ineptitude and incompetence of the people running the NHSC (a point echoed many times on this forum). Still, I applied because I desperately want to do primary care, and to practice in an underserved community, yet without financial assistance, I will probably be forced to pick a more lucrative specialty.

Newsflash to president Obama, if you want to solve the healthcare crisis, fire everyone who works at the NHSC, rehire half-way competent people to run the program, increase the funding several fold, and you will go a long way towards solving the healthcare crisis (e.g. End the primary care shortage, Improve the economics of healthcare delivery since less specialists means less procedures, etc.).

That is all. Best of luck to those who receive the scholarship. I wish you well.

No letter in my mailbox, just junk postmarked 9/29, so I'm thinking it's a no for me this year.

Congrats to those who got it, though! Maybe I'll get it next year....

No mail for me either. I don't think this is really one of those "no news is good news" situations. Maybe next time.

Congrats to those who received a scholarship!

Hey guys,

So I got a letter today stating that I got the scholarship! :) But I wanted to post bc mine was postmarked on Oct 2nd...so clearly the deadline isn't a hard one...

Congratulations to everyone who has heard! Thanks for posting, beyondcategory, makes me feel like the letters are just out there in the mail. My parents are so tired of my daily calls about the mail and accompanying sighs when there is nothing there. I hope we all hear something soon!

I got an accept today! Postmark was 10/2, so if you haven't gotten yours, it could be en route : )

Congrats! I'm still hoping...

Congrats all you acceptees! I'll keep my fingers crossed for everyone.
I live in New Orleans, and not to say that this city hasn't made leaps and bounds of recovery since Katrina, but my mail still only comes a few times a week. So looks like my fingers may be crossed for quite a while...

So maybe there is still some hope left... I'll just try not to get my hopes up too high and maybe it can be an exciting surprise.

Has anyone tried to call NHSC to see if they will tell you over the phone?

Just got my acceptance letter!! It's dated Sept. 24th, but I just got it today, Oct. 5th. Post office must have screwed up my change of address a while back.

STOKED!!!

I received my letter today!! Such a relief!!

Congratulations to all who have heard and best of luck to those waiting :)

so these letters are still coming out - mine just arrived today. good luck to everyone else.

I just got the letter today! :) It's posted marked on 10/2. Good luck everyone!

Has anyone who got the finalist/alternate email in mid-September gotten a rejection? I still haven't gotten a letter of any kind!

Has anyone who got the finalist/alternate email in mid-September gotten a rejection? I still haven't gotten a letter of any kind!

I have not received a letter of any kind either. When I called the NHSC today to verify that they had my correct address, the woman told me (falsely) that the letters had been mailed out by the 30th (some have received them postmarked as late as Oct. 2nd). She also told me that an award letter may take 2 weeks to arrive.

She then said that those who did not receive a scholarship and were alternates would hear after those 2 weeks. But then later said that they would hear if a scholarship was made available - so which one is right, I don't know.

Despite having told her that I received a letter saying I was an alternate or a finalist, she reiterated that I would hear by Oct. 31 if I did not receive one and why.

That's all I know, but to answer your question: I received an email mid-September but I have not heard a 'no' other than my assumed 'no' by default.

If you google NHSC Facebook, you'll see a series of questions answered directly by NHSC staff members. Some apply to loan repayment but others to the Scholarship program. As recently as yesterday they said that letters were mailed to everyone who applied for a scholarship. So.... something is in the mail according to that source of information. Good luck!

I received an award letter for the scholarship the other day. :) It didn't say anything about contacting them to let them know you accept. Do we have to do anything? Or just wait some more until we hear from them again about the conference?

The people who manage the application process are not the same people who manage the administration of the scholarship. I would just hang tight, though I did meet w/ my school's financial aid counselor to discuss what to do as far as my stafford loans were concerned.

FYI: all I needed to do was fill out a change form, which will go into effect once the money hits the school acct. We decided the smart thing to do was to continue to receive the sub stafford (it's w/in my need amt, even w/ the scholarship) and apply that towards unsub stafford balance I have from last year (when I had no scholarship, duh), because even w/ the fees, it's still a better deal to get rid of the interest. Also, if you have other loans, your state may be able to roll them into a lower interest rate, deferrable primary care loan once you match into a primary care residency (I couldn't say whether the state would do this for other fields, I only know the MD/DO stuff). Just realize that doesn't include psych and ob for most areas, and the info may change depending on available funding.

I was wondering the same thing, but in the letter it says that someone will contact you soon. I think someone else posted earlier that if your signature page on the contract is signed by the Secretary, then it's a done deal.

Has anybody heard about the Tampa conference? I got the award letter awhile back and no one from NHSC has contacted me. From their Facebook page, someone mentioned about getting an email for the conference training...when is that? Do you guys know any more info? Thanks!

Just so everyone knows, I saw a similar question on the facebook NHSC site today and the NHSC rep replied that the email we faxed in checking that we would accept the scholarship if offered is considered an acceptance to the final letter that was sent out. So no worries. :)

does anyone know if you get the scholarship, do you have to reapply every year?

Did anyone who got the award letter get multiple contracts signed by NHSC or just this one year?

When I got my scholarship notification, the entire:laugh::laugh: four year contract was signed.

No. When you apply for the scholarship, you're supposed to sign one line for each year that you would like to receive the contract. (At least, that's how we did it a few years ago; it might have changed since.)

You get ONE contract; I think you just sign it multiple times.

So does this mean that you will automatically get it renewed for every year that you are eligible for it?

Yes, you sign a line for each year, and as long as the Secretary signs it, you're good to go.

Hey everyone!
Does anyone know when we receive our first payments for the scholarship?

Thank you

Hey everyone!
Does anyone know when we receive our first payments for the scholarship?

Thank you

You usually get them in September/October/November, I think. I remember getting mine in either October or November.

They pay you a huge amount of money (amount of stipend you would have gotten since July or August along with your annual ORC) that first month.

according to the application bulletin, it'll be in the first week of november.

does anyone know how much the ORC payment will be?

Your ORC amount will vary by school year, and will vary by school. Your school has to submit an estimate to the NHSC, and that's the amount that you get. It depends on whether or not your school requires health insurance, how much your school estimates you will need for books and supplies, etc.
