I'm on HPSP now. I'd love to do a residency after school, like endo or pedo and have Uncle Sam pay for it under FAP too. Then, I'd like to serve out my time as that specialist concurrently. Thus Uncle Sam would pay for 4 years of dental school (tuition and stipend), 2 years of a residency (tuition, stipend and program stipend (~$100K total per year)), and I give him back just 4 years as an endodontist or pediatric dentist. According to my local recruiter, this is possible. I'd just have to get a deferrment from Active Duty for the Specialty. So, do I apply for NADDS, get it and then apply for FAP or will applying through NADDS deny me any FAP opportunity?

Also HUGE QUESTION. While OMFS, ENDO, and PROSTHO are usually the dental specialties granted in NADDS, what are this years "needed" specialties. BUMEDNOTE 1520 just says which specialties will be available in the service vs outside of the service.

While I'm on this, when is the appropriate time to apply for an Active Duty Deferment for a specialty?
