Need to pick between these 2 schools, cost is pretty much the same, anybody know which one has better research/give me better opportunity to specialize later?

My vote is ASDOH. I know for a fact that Midwestern wants to graduate super dentists and nothing wrong with that btw. They were looking for a part time Orthodontist and when I emailed the director ... all he wanted to know about was aligner treatment. I asked him if he had any real interest in someone who could teach REAL growth and development/real orthodontics. He said no. I walked out.

Hey there, current D2 at Midwestern AZ, I have some friends at ASDOH.

If you are looking for a superb clinical education with access to all of the latest technology and the most productive dental clinic in the nation, then you should consider Midwestern AZ. If you want to be a service oriented practitioner and would consider working in a hospital or community dentistry, or you are looking to specialize, then ASDOH would probably be a better fit. Either way, you will receive a fine dental education.

Hi cello, can you elaborate on why do you think ASDOH is better for specialization?

I should probably qualify what I said because I think my statement was a bit misleading. You can specialize from any school, no doubt about it. However, some schools attract more students who want to specialize. Midwestern attracts a lot of students who want to be general dentists. Consequently, Midwestern's curriculum is geared towards training exceptional general clinicians. That doesn't mean that our students can't specialize, they absolutely can.

ASDOH generally attracts and accepts students who are more interested in public health dentistry and service. Consequently, many of their students will do a GPR or an AEGD after school. Technically, that counts as specialty post-graduate training, so that is part of the reason ASDOH puts up high 'specialist' numbers. I interviewed there for the class of 2020, and the number of ASDOH students who go into peds is exceptionally high. That may be due in part to the fact that ASDOH students are service oriented and may want to help underserved children.

Neither ASDOH nor Midwestern graduates large numbers of future OMFS or perio residents. For that you would want to look at Penn, Columbia, Harvard, UCSF, and other legacy schools with established specialty training programs and a more traditional approach to dental education. Neither ASDOH nor Midwestern offer specialty programs aside from a small OMFS program (2 residents per year) at MWU and an AEGD at ASDOH in collaboration with NYU Lutheran Dental.
