Pre-clinical (foundational) learning is deeply broken. Many schools still use live lectures, and no-one wants that. For the schools that tape their lectures and try to flip their classrooms, the study materials are just that-- a tape of a "live lecture." There are over 1,000 medical schools in the world using English for instruction, spending over $8 BILLION a year of tuition income, and not a single one provides "optimized" or "personalized" digital learning materials (DLM). The fact is, the 200,000+ pre-clinical medical students world-wide would be much better served with one optimized learning program than with 1,000 different Power Point presentations with voice-overs.
Finally, though, there is a plan to fix this! We have created a learning program called PLaTO (Personalized Learning and Technology-Optimized) and are raising $10-20 million to create one comprehensive digital learning library that will have enriched media, have embedded assessment tools, and be interactive. We will do randomized controlled trials to prove that PLaTO: 1) improves outcomes on NBME scores, 2) improves student satisfaction, and 3) is more cost-effective than the current model. We will use "evidence-based learning" to study our program and improve it continually.
We are looking for medical students to help us. What do you all think?
