Simple question here. Im an HPSP DO student and am only planning on doing four years in the military. I want the experience of being an officer but dont plan on making it a career. If I were to do an internal medicine residency, serve my four years as an IM doc, and then apply for a civilian fellowship when my commitment is up, how would this look towards program directors? Would having military experience help or hurt? Im debating between general surgery or doing IM --> Pulm/Crit. I guess Im also wondering which path would be more feasible. Thanks!

Helps a little as it gets brought up during interviews. Otherwise, you still need grades/scores/letters just like any other applicant. Given that the military has its own residencies and fellowships, veteran status might be a moot point anyway.
