Heard that its program is based on University of Queensland...not exactly well known within australia though (of the undergrad unis).

It is one of the unis in Australia that are not listed as 'world's medical school' by WHO.

It's a new medical school, if it's not listed, it will be. It's essentially a spin-off of UQ's northern school. 6 year undergrad course, first grads will graduate 2005.

Just continuing on and rehasing from Pill Counter....

It is a fairly new 6yr undergrad medical program that took it's first students back in 2002. JCU is based up in north Queensland.

UQ wasn't too pleased about this initially as they already had the clinical schools up north and a monopoly on Queensland medical education. http://www.uq.edu.au/news/index.phtml?article=1371

The course is primarily for rural school leavers, but the program does take some international students.

I'm currently doing nursing with JCU and have so far been fairly impressed by their teaching in this area.

That is all.

JCU is a small but good University with campuses in Cairns and Townsville in North Queensland. (The medical school is based mainly in the latter.)

They have set up a good tropical medicine centre, and additionally specialise in Indigenous and rural/remote health care. JCU also has a great reputation for marine research, so there are probably opportunities in maritime/marine medicine too.

More info about JCU's School of Medicine can be found at http://www.jcu.edu.au/school/medicine/

The degree is the standard six-year undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) with clinical experience from the first year.

If you already have a degree you might consider the four year graduate medicine courses at places like UQ (Brisbane). For more info see http://www.uq.edu.au/study/program.html?acad_prog=2046

Far North Queensland is an amazing part of the world. Townsville is a small city of about fifty thousand, smack bang next to the Great Barrier Reef and a step away from Australia's last great tropical rainforests.

best of luck

townsville - 50,000!!! the military there alone number over 20,000... i'm originally from Rockhampton, a place about 8hrs drive south of there - i can assure you it's a little bigger than that!

when up in queensland i've been in emergency with a couple of JCU students - they're 'good kids'

by the way, if you go to townsville, don't miss going to Magnetic Island - top spot!

Hi!

I'm in Rockhampton at them moment and I'm going to study med this year. I've been offered a place at JCU and I might get one from the University of Adelaide. I would like to come and work in Rockhampton after I finish for my residency and internship and would like to know whether this is possible if I go study at Adelaide or even JCU as it has affiliations with Mackay, Cairns and Townsville hospitals.
Also on an entirely different matter is it suitable to live in an university college in respect to ability to study or would renting or another option be better.

In respect to the original question JCU is one of the top two uni's in QLD (with UQ) although its respect in Australia is not high.
I'm interested in Adelaide as it's one of the best universities in the country and the people and services offered there are friendly and it just seems to suit me better.

Anyway

Cheers

if you do your training at any aus med school, you will be able to do your intership at any hospital - however, most states give preference to students who went to med school in that state -

eg (this is an example, don't bring out any literature!!)

Royal Brisbane might set aside two or 3 interstate places for interns, but the rest would be qld trained

if you went to med school anywhere, you'd have a good chance of getting an internship in rocky - particularly if you were from rockhampton originally
