Would you like to make the most of your medical training by delivering patient-centered care on an interdisciplinary team in a specialty that optimizes health, function and patient interaction? If life-long care that focuses as much on medical issues as on fostering resilience, optimal health behavior, and community involvement is where you see your role as a physician; if you enjoy working in a team of providers whose professions, expertise and experience complement your own; and if you enjoy working in the combined atmosphere of primary care, sub-specialized care and urgent care; then SCI medicine may be the right career path for you.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) medicine addresses the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of traumatic SCI and non-traumatic etiologies of spinal cord dysfunction. These may include traumatic injuries as a result of motor vehicle collisions, violence, or falls; non-traumatic disorders such as spondylitic myelopathies; motor neuron diseases (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis); infectious and inflammatory diseases (epidural abscess, multiple sclerosis); vascular disorders (arterial-venous malformations); toxic and metabolic conditions; and congenital and development disorders (spina bifida). All organ systems are impacted by SCI resulting in a spectrum of unique, disease-specific conditions which are of clinical interest to physicians from multiple specialties. Acute and lifelong care for individuals with SCI is delivered by a team of interdisciplinary healthcare professionals and integrates medical, physical, psychological, and vocational aspects with the goals of maximizing health, independence, productivity, and quality of life. This is a work environment where clinicians can push the limits of knowledge regarding disease mechanisms, access to health care, health care utilization and emerging interventions and treatment offered by innovated neural repair and restoration, robotics, and biotechnology.

SCI Medicine fellowship training offers the opportunity for physicians from a variety of specialties to develop clinical expertise and specialized skills while working with dynamic interdisciplinary teams. One-year ACGME-accredited SCI Medicine fellowship programs are offered at academic institutions nationally to qualified individuals. Programs strive to offer physicians the knowledge and skills to deliver comprehensive, quality, and compassionate care to individuals with SCI. Qualified candidates will have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited residency program in one of the following specialties: anesthesiology; emergency medicine; family medicine; internal medicine; neurological surgery; neurology; orthopedic surgery; pediatrics; physical medicine and rehabilitation; plastic surgery; surgery; OR urology.

Interested individuals are encouraged to review the Academy of SCI Professionals (ASCIP) Fellowship website at SCI Fellowship - Academy Spinal Cord Injury Professionals, Inc. for more information and links to application and accredited programs.

Has SCI always been open to multiple specialties or is this new?
