I am a hospitalist with a FP colleague who would love to do critical care. Would any of the programs that are open to EM docs doing CC be open to taking an FP and would she then be able to take the european boards? She has been practicing IM style hospital medicine with ICU experience for several years if that matters.

Maybe. The 2008 EDIC (European Diploma in Intensive Care) doesn't mention FP, but it may fall under "other medical specialties". I would suggest that your friend contact the ESICM and inquire BEFORE starting their fellowship.

However, it may be a little difficult for an FP with CC training to gain CC credentials in a hospital. EM already has practically the same privileges an intensivist does, so it isn't as much of a stretch.

Your friend needs to start inquiring around various hospitals, CC programs, and the ESICM.

Try this link for the 2008 guidelines.

Good luck.
