how do the pediatric subspecialties that have IM counterparts compare in terms of workload? do peds cardiologists have a better life than adult? it seems like you'd sleep thru the night more since there aren't kids having MIs every night in every city. any thoughts?

good thoughts but not true, at least in tertiary care centers.

congenital heart disease is pretty common, and at big places, where cardiology felloships happen to occur there are many pre and post op congenital hearts, as well as kids that had previous surgery that are constantly showing up in emergency rooms with various problems.

peds cards fellows are usually very busy.

the kicker is that most places that are big enough to support fellows, are very busy and frankly, this is where you want to train so you can see everything.

after pfellowship, if you do private practice, life definately slows down....of course there is always somebody that wants an urgent echo at 3 AM....

academic medicine seems to be periods of frantic busyness when you are on service interrupted by a bit slower lifestyle when you are doing research

in terms of numbers there are FAR FEWER peds subspecialists in a city compared to adults
