Hi I am a First year, just got done with my first set of exams. - Did not do stellar but not horrible either ( I know I can raise my grades.)

The real question , How important are Year 1 grades and What should I be doing to as a first year to explore this field? ( I am not dead set about NS but I find it very interesting)

First year grades matter little. Step 1 is much more important. But if you do well 1st and 2nd year you'll have an easier time with the boards.

To explore neurosurgery, hang out with neurosurgeons. Contact the staff in you department and shadow in the OR, the clinic and on the floor. Go to Grand Rounds or any conferences that are held. Ask to be involved in research or write up a case report for publication. Get to know the residents.
