Title: Fellowship in Clinical Otolaryngologic Research at the Advanced Center for Specialty Care, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Timeframe: This position will commence in July 1, 2013, and terminate in July 1, 2014. Work hours vary, but the fellow is expected to work full time, Monday through Friday and most Sunday mornings throughout the one year period.

This research fellowship offers a unique opportunity to become involved in a variety of research projects, all of which are conducive to obtaining peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international meetings.

The successful Fellow will be expected to organize and carry out multiple clinical research projects throughout the year. This will involve study design, IRB application, data collection (either through retrospective review of charts or prospective interactions with patients), data analysis and interpretation, and manuscript and presentation preparation. There are typically multiple projects at various stages of completion in progress at any point in time. Excellent organizational and writing skills are required. Proficiency in English is also necessary due to the large degree of patient interaction that occurs. Projects are predominantly clinical outcomes research in the areas of Sleep Surgery, Laryngology, Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and Rhinology, with a more minor focus on Head & Neck and Skull-base Surgery and Pediatric Otolaryngology.

The research component is not salaried. Therefore, in addition to research commitments, the Fellow's other duties include preparation of lecture materials, writing articles on diseases of the head and neck for patient information, and assisting with other academic and clinical activities at the Advanced Center for Specialty Care. Clinical duties include working closely with the Dental Sleep Medicine team in performing acoustic airway testing and fitting oral appliances for sleep apnea. Academic duties include reviewing a large number of manuscripts submitted to several leading ENT journals, and coordinating medical student research rotations. The yearly salary (to be confirmed for the 2013-2014 period) comes from performing these duties.

The fellowship director, Dr. Michael Friedman MD, has a very busy clinical practice, and the successful Fellow will be exposed to all aspects of OTO-HNS. This fellowship is ideally suited to unmatched students, preliminary surgical interns, or residents in other specialties who are interested in training in Otolaryngology and are seeking to improve on their existing research experience in preparation for the Match. International medical graduates are also encouraged to apply, however, the practice in unable to provide visa sponsorship.
