I am thinking about applying for this program after the first year of medical school, which I believe will allow me to make an informed decision about going into primary care. After completing a residency in internal medicine, peds, family practice, ob/gyn, or psych you work in an underserved community for four years. If I decide I want to specialize in one of those fields, will fellowship programs accept me after a hiatus from formal medical training? Any input is greatly appreciated.

I'm going to move this to the forum we have to discuss these types of programs. :) I'd also suggest searching in the SDN residency forums to see about the difficulty of being accepted into a fellowship after practicing primary care for a few years. My hunch is that if you have a competitive application, your NHSC time will not hurt you in getting a fellowship.

Thanks for your help.
