Fellowship After Fulfilling NHSC Service Requirement

I am thinking about applying for this program after the first year of medical school, which I believe will allow me to make an informed decision about going into primary care. After completing a residency in internal medicine, peds, family practice, ob/gyn, or psych you work in an underserved community for four years. If I decide I want to specialize in one of those fields, will fellowship programs accept me after a hiatus from formal medical training? Any input is greatly appreciated.

I'm going to move this to the forum we have to discuss these types of programs. I'd also suggest searching in the SDN residency forums to see about the difficulty of being accepted into a fellowship after practicing primary care for a few years. My hunch is that if you have a competitive application, your NHSC time will not hurt you in getting a fellowship.
