Suppose you have two options:
1. Researching at a big name place, but you don't know whether you will be able to get published.
2. Researching at a less well-known college, but a high chance of getting published

Which option would help me more when applying for residency?

It depends on whether you're trying to network as part of the process or you're solely interested in securing a publication for your CV.

Typically the big name places have more well known researchers and many more projects. Not to mention the added benefit of networking at larger places.
