Hello. I am stuck on whether I even have a shot on DO schools, retake the MCAT, do an SMP, or move on and do something else. I'm a non-trad and would like some frankness.

cGPA: 3.32 and sGPA: 3.20

MCAT: 495 -> 501 (126/123/127/125)

State of residence: Colorado

Ethnicity and/or race: 1st generation, Mexican

Undergraduate institution: state school

Clinical experience: +4000 hrs of EMT in busy system

Research: ~2 years of HIV research, 4 posters, 1 pub (3rd author), 2 summer research projects

Shadowing: >50 hrs primary care, ~12 infectious disease

Non-clinical volunteering: ~300 hrs at ICE detention center via non-profit

Extracurricular activities: pre-healthcare club (member 3 years, president 1.5 years), under represented Healthcare internship (1 yr, ~15 hrs of commitment every week for an academic year), Gen chem and O Chem TA (1 semester before covid took over)

Relevant honors or awards: 3 research grants (>$10,000 total), EMS award from the city

Anything else not listed you think might be important
-had to work nights with parents throughout college to afford school and family bills
-worked full time while studying for MCAT
- Strong LoR from physician, my research PI, and head of EMS that I work for

I think given the strength of your activities you could craft a pretty good narrative. Obviously what would hold you back is the GPA and MCAT (more so the MCAT than GPA imo).

I don't think you have much of a shot at MD schools but DO should be achievable, even without an SMP. And unless you can dramatically raise your MCAT (by at least 10+ points), a retake isn't worth your effort.

Thank you for your message. I had an inkling that MD would be out of the question.

MD will be very difficult without a true mission fit. Have you connected with SNMA or the LMSA chapters at MD and DO schools in the top of your wishlist? I around contact postbac program directors if you want to shoot for a postbac or SMP.

Check out those constituents at the Arizona DO schools, Burrell NM, and RVU.

You are competitive for the majority of DO schools and I suggest these:
Noorda-COM
TUNCOM
UIWSOM
BCOM (both schools)
ATSU-KCOM
KCU-COM
MU-COM
NYITCOM
WCU-COM
ACOM
NOVA
OCOM
LECOM (all schools)
PCOM (all schools)
WVSOM
CUSOM
LMU-DCOM
You could also receive interviews at MD schools and I suggest these:
Colorado
Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson)
Creighton
TCU
Rosalind Franklin
Rush
Loyola
Medical College Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State
Belmont
NOVA MD
Eastern Virginia
George Washington
Drexel
Temple
Hackensack
Albany
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Alice Walton (when it opens)
Roseman (when it opens)
Apply in June and submit all your secondaries by July.

I have not connected with those. I did not even know that as a thing.

Thank you for the extensive list. I will apply as soon as I can this cycle. I hope it goes well.
