Hi everyone. I'm currently going over the "Excretion" section in the Kaplan book. I'm having a very hard time understanding what they are talking about. Does anyone actually understand this stuff regarding kidneys?

Yes, the urinary system is a favorite topic on the DAT.

Know the following key words:

nephron, glomerlous, bowmans capsule, proximal convuluted tubule, loop of henle, distal convoluted tubule, and collecting duct,

the whole process is filtration and concentration. There are some things that will not enter the nephron in the first place (big items like proteins, etc), then there are something that will enter but get reabsorbed (like glucose, and water). The second step is concentration. if there is limited water then the body wants to conserve it, so it reabsorbs the water back into the system, thus causing your urine to look smiley yellow --> ;)

Or it could be caused by the excess of water soluble nutrients such as certain vitamins. That's why after you take supplements pee is darker.

However, when you drink lots of water then your urine is clear, this is cuz there is an excess of water and it does not need to be reabsorbed.

From the collecting duct (where urine is formed) it is send to the bladder and hence sent to the urethra and then it is excreted.

What you should know on the DAT:

What is reabsorbed and where,
Different names,
and different parts in different animals.

Hope this helps,
