Women at Work Symposium

There was a lengthy discussion going on, now deleted out. I just want to voice concern about erasure of discussions. I feel like this is drifting in a bad direction.

The discussions didn't have much to do with the thread's purpose, which is focused on promoting the symposium. Hence why the thread got moved and posts deleted to focus on the symposium.

Generally, posts and threads aren't deleted unless they're spam/advertising/trolling etc.

Perhaps to alleviate your concerns, one approach could be to separate the posts from the thread and rename it as a new thread for continued discussions.

I think that would have been a more measured moderator response

Had the deleted posts not been filled with personal insults between two users, that would have been appropriate. However, in this case the users in question were using the thread (which was about a seminar of no interest to one of them) to soapbox.

You've been around here long enough to know that threads are not deleted frequently. However, it is our policy to remove spam, trolling and in the case of users violating the TOS, it is up to staff's discretion to remove those if they derail the thread (which they certainly did in this case). The users in question are certainly welcome to post about the presence of women in surgery if they wish in the TIH forum.

I think that it is a a valid point - no discussions should be deleted without any reason whatsoever. There should be a reason and it should be told beforehand.
Agreed to some extent.

Spam, pornographic material, and other prohibited content can be deleted without discussion. If the moderator wishes to post about why something was deleted we would encourage that. This is a newer policy and it takes some time for staff to be come comfortable with transparency. This is especially true if the post warranted administrative action against the users account because we were trained for many years not to comment on that.

However, discussing deletion “before hand“ seems impractical and a waste of our staffs time. After all, sending a user day notes that you’ll be deleting their post and then posting in the thread that you’ll be deleting a post seems redundant.

our input does not matter. The mods here will delete or lock when they "feel" it's right.

That may be technically true, but in almost 15 years I can count on 1 hand the number of threads I've seen locked or deleted where I thought it was uncalled for.

There was more recently a thread in the pre-med forum on the VA governor, Ralph Northam's blackface picture appearing in EVMS's yearbook and how it will reflect on the school, but the thread was closed by the mod for being "off-topic". Not sure how it was off-topic as people were discussing what they felt the news's impact would have on the school. Was a bit concerning to me, especially since everyone was behaving very professionally and staying surprisingly on topic for a pretty heavy subject.

This is a perfect example. That thread was arguably on topic but guess what, due to the mods overruling presense it was deleted. Only on this forum I see so much handwaving by mods. Discussions like that SHOULD be encouraged as Long as users aren't attacked.

It won't. /thread

Snark aside, I could see moving that to a more appropriate section (TIH) but having not read the thread there might very well have been a reason why it was just closed.

This user was also a stealth spammer

Sorry that I'm just seeing this since I'm the person who ultimately took action here; I didn't realize there was an active discussion ongoing about our action.

This issue here was that the thread was really an ad for a symposium which was misplaced outside of the classified forum, and unfortunately the thread did not come to our attention until after a significant discussion had already taken place. While the points expressed in the thread about women in surgery may be valid, it's not really on topic once the thread is moved to the Classifieds.

I don't take the idea of deleting an entire thread lightly, and so I'd push back on the idea that we do things capriciously; I took the action that seemed most fair to the original poster. I also didn't act alone without input from other mod staff, and none of us do except in the clear cases outlined by WS above (ie porn).

In the interest of transparency:

The thread that was closed was after discussion that pre-allo was not really the place for it. In other words, the discussion seemed political in nature and not really on topic for pre-allo.

There is a school specific thread for EVMS where that discussion has been going on and how it affects the reputation of the school, which is relevant. As I posted in that thread, the school-specific thread will not be closed, but inappropriate content will be removed.

If you feel a thread was closed inappropriately, you can always report that post and say why. We have reopened threads before if there is a good argument for it.

And finally, this forum is meant to be a forum for professionals and pre-professionals. Personally, I have learned a lot from this forum, and so when I hear from people in real life or on other sites that I shouldn’t go to SDN because of some sort of bad rep, it disappoints me because I know how helpful and supportive this place can be. It only takes a couple threads to sully the reputation of this place, and as moderators, part of our job is to try to keep this place the great resource that it is. I speak just for myself when I say this, but that’s part of the reason why I accepted the mod position: to give back to this site and help keep it a place where people can get great info and support. That said, feedback is always welcome, and I strive to do the best job I can. :)
