COMP 2008

I am still trying to come to terms with all of my addictions. Perhaps some couterstrain along my splenic meridian can cure my alcohol addiction and reverse the effects of my defective melanocorticoid receptors. If not, I found some bootleg PC spec from Thailand on the internet that I can get my hands on for $100/bottle.

if my Sarcasm radar is tuned up i'd sense you didn't like the 'musak' and my apologies but you'd be surprised as to how many of your classmates requested songs older than dirt.

i had a blast tho and want to thank u guys for making it such a special night

i wish we could have these end of the year banquets every week...anybody up for that?

u mean now i have to crack a book open!? oh noooooooooo :scared:

sorry i missed out! its all good though;
we should have one during first semester next year; at georgetown the med students put on a "winter carnival" a banquet like event toward the end of first semester, it would be a chance for first and second years to hang out together

Damn your class has had the most banquests/bbqs/dinners I've heard of in the last few years. The past few weeks I just got lost trying to keep track of them all, but I'm glad you guys are enjoying yourselves now.

No No No, your sarcasm radar is turned up way to high. I love all that old skool stuff. I was trying to be funny and apparently failed miserably.

we deserve it!

nuthin but love..

yeah, the banquet was awesome...I must admit though that the DJ started out a little slow, but he got in some good jams as the night continued. Awesome job to the officers and everyone that contributed! I definitely agree: we need to have more of these!

prom was awesome! just like hs all over again except for the alcohol. j/k.
spent most of today's lecture looking at those prom pics. :D

only one week left!!!! yes!!! btw, last poker game of the year at the commons casino (where everyone knows your name) after case studies!

I hope people have enough money to pay rent and tuition for next year after all the money changing hands..

Hi guys! I will be starting COMP in august and needed your help with something. My dad is coming back from Asia and since you can get the same books for so much cheaper, i thought id ask you guys to give me names of some important books that i will be needing. I tried the admissions office but they did not have a list yet.
thanks.

Some people are able to get through the entire first year with just the Netter Atlas of Anatomy, but it's nice to have some other books here and there. The curriculum is changing, but I am guessing the same sorts of books will be useful depending on how dependent you are on outside reading to learn the material.

Cool
1. Netter Atlas of Anatomy
Any others?

Thankyou.

Thankyou.

You must get "How The Immune System Works" for core immuno (not required text, but the simplest, most concise book on the subject ever).

Also get Young and Young "Basic Clinical Anatomy" for 2nd semester neuro, again not on the list, but you will be hurting without it. I wish somebody would have told me that.

These two + the Netter atlas are the only 3 books that you really need. You can never go wrong with an updated version of any of the Lange books for physio, pharm, etc, but certainly not necessary (but if you can get dirt cheap then why not).

One should know that for our exams, the handouts are generally all you will need to read. Anything else you buy will simply be for reference if you are stuck on a particular topic, but all of these resources are available in the library.

You will need the 3 books listed above though. No hay duda!

Netter's the only book i thought was useful; i bought some other stuff but it was not so helpful; so i'd say netter is absolutely essential, the rest, you can just borrow from the library or from a 2nd year

If the rumors about a block anatomy course for the class of 2009 are true, who in their right mind would want to give up their last summer and do ISAC?

I can see why the faculty would want to continue the program but who wants to pay extra tuition and give up their last summer without getting the traditional 1st semester "advantage?"

What will the ISACers do for the first month of Fall semester besides facilitate?

I am one of the sad few that bought tons of books I never used nor never needed. Unless you can get them relatively cheap I wouldn't bother with any extras. I do agree with what JMC says about those book, I liked them as well. I also liked the review books from lipincott, pharm is good but needs updated, but the Biochemistry one is really pretty good as well. The only other book I personally liked was Micorbiology made ridicuolosly simple, it has stupid cartoons and stories, but it helped me.

Ultimately it depends on how you learn best for your self. All of the material is readily available in note form and powerpoint, but some students just need a different approach.

The most useful book for me this year was Robbins and Coltran's Pathologic Basis of Disease. I also used Netter's Atlas alot for anatomy. For Pharm, I ONLY used Lippincott's Illustrated Review of Pharmocology. (I too bought just about every book on the list... I did use most of them at some point, though, so it wasn't a COMPLETE waste). But definitely the Robbins and Netter will be your friends.

Robbins for Pathology is pretty standard no matter where you go to medical school and it is pretty good reading whether you are prepping for USMLE Step 1 or looking something up later as a fourth year.

Let me just say that this year was pretty remarkable. I had a blast truckin' thru the madness with all of you this year and I hope you all have a blast this summer!

enjoy it while it lasts...

Carpe Diem.

I'm serving under a humanitarian medical mission in Tibet. Have been saving lives, delivering babies and curing blindness with mud and tree bark extract.

This is the life my friends! So what have you been up to?

so should i feel guilty if i haven't touched a review book yet this summer?

I'm right there with ya. then again, i have been seeing patients 2 days a week, does that count?

No don't feel bad!!! It is better to enjoy the summer while it lasts than to worry about Boards at this point..... ;)

Now that all depends...when you say "seeing patients" does that mean you just stare at them until they walk away or are you helping them advance their health or your knowledge or both?

I can't believe people are still posting on this old thread! :p Anyone know students that have been accepted to WesternU/COMP through their early decision program? I would appreciate any feedback!

This is nothing. My old class of 2005 thread went on for about 3-4 years. Granted, it was sporadic after 2 years, it picked up for a little while during rotations. We had two total threads and I don't recall how many pages...

HA HA. No, I'm actually shadowing a pediatrician two days a week, but it's more like rotating with him, because he lets me go in and do my own exam first, then i report to him and we go back in together. I chart the visit, and everything. he introduces me as Dr too.

Haha I guess you fooled those patients. =p (j/k)

Don't feel guilty at all.... this is your last extended summer, plus it would be too early to be studying for boards. Gotta get through 2nd year first, enjoy your summer!

Melancholy: Whats going on Lanny... this is the first time i've been on this thing long time. Ready to get out of COMP yet? Im out in MI as a PGY2 doing ER after interning at Arrowhead.

Hey Eric - Yeah for some reason I don't remember seeing you around Arrowhead, but I haven't been spending much time there since my first 3rd year rotations. I did see your picture on the website for the old interns though. Let me know how Michigan is like because I don't really know much about how life is there. I'm doing a few out-rotations on the east coast for PM&R, then back to a few more back home like ortho and ER and ARMC. Applying to PM&R this year for sure..

ahhhhh man, one more week in this humid crappy hellhole and i'm back to beautiful so cal. hope everyone's summer has been fantastic. didn't review much but from what i've heard, it's not the end of the world.

ya'll better come to my party august 6th. PM me if you didn't get my e-mail.

You guys are toast!

I have been riding this great big wave of recent success; Of course all of you have read my recent publication in this week's NEJM entitled "Novel Treatment Modality Suggests Long-Term Success in Curing Congenital Blindness With African Palm Tree Bark Extract." Well, while this was being considered for publication, I enrolled in the Kaplan review course for the USMLE and scored in the 99th percentile, thus convincing me that my time would be better served this upcoming year by continuing my tree bark extract research rather than attending lecture. Additionally, I sent my preliminery board scores to the Director of Radiation Onclology at JHU and he has 'unofficially' agreed to a guaranteed position in thier residency program come 2008.

But that's okay...you guys just keep on slacking while I plot to take over the world.

Having two profs say diff things bout the same subject is nooooooooot cooooooool.
