can you choose any specialty you like with the navy?

I was wondering whether YOU can choose any specialty you want to do with the navy residency program? I mean if you want ortho then you will get ortho..there is no match or anything of that sort..is this correct? pls let me know, thanks

Search around the posts, I don't want to reinvent the wheel here. Yes there is a match, the specialties that are competitive in the civilian world are also in the military, you can apply for any specialty you want but there is no guarantee that you will get it. And the Navy trains to its needs, so the very focused or rare specialties may not be needed, so no training spots...recent examples are PM and R, Rad Onc, Pediatric subs. I know people who were well qualified but ultimately went civilian because the Navy didn't project a need for those specialists. No free ride into specialites just because you owe the Navy time.
