I am curious if any ophthalmologists were once optometrists and to ask some questions:

why they decided to do so?

how hard was it to get into medical school?

how difficult is the transition?

was it worth the time and work?

i'm currently on the pre-optometry track, but i still have this little gut feeling of maybe wanting to go to medical school. i'm still thinking which profession is best for me. i work for a retina specialist and i also volunteer for an optometrist. to be honest, i do get a little bored watching the OD do the same thing over and over again. but then again, my boss (OMD?) is really, really busy and has his hands full with his research.

part of this indecisiveness is primarily my grades and the extra years i'd possibly be taking to get to medical school (i was thinking of doing the RN to MD route).

i would greatly appreciate hearing from someone with experience in this situation.

thanks!!!

Hi JG777,

I think there can be a lot of advantages going the OD-MD route. I know some who have done that. You should message evans267 because she's a practicing OD who completed medical school and applied for ophthalmology residency this year.

Good luck!

Yes, this subject sounds interesting, indeed.

We actually have 3 OD's turned Ophthalmologists in my area. One is is the military, the other two are former military. Two are Ped's/Strab specialists (and as busy as anyone want's to get).

The other is a general OMD doing alot of cataracts and lid surgery.

Too bad they aren't here to comment.:)
