For anyone interested in the residency program expansion/job market/earning a living in 10 years, the ACGME is asking for comments which may directly impact how programs operate. They are requested feedback, which is due today (Sept 1, 2021).
Why is this important? ACGME requirements are probably the best/fastest way to make opening new programs more difficult, and potentially force the closure of smaller programs which cannot comply with more stringent rules. This would be a Good Thing.
Link: ACGME Review and Comment page
Link: Program Requirements -- includes all requirements to open/maintain a program and is 60 pages in length; you do not have to read this entire document to comment
Link: Impact Statement -- this includes proposed changes to programs and is 7 pages in length; you should read this entire document
After reading the Impact Statement, you may feel compelled to send an email to ACGME with your thoughts. Great! Use this form: Review and Comment Form (MS Word) and email to RO at acgme dot org (all of this information is also listed on the first line).
Personally, I feel strongly about the core faculty minimums (section II.B.4.b).(1)) and case type minimums (Requirement IV.C.5.c)-IV.C.5.e), but that's just me.
Thanks for taking the time to do this!
